Set of four Gothic ornaments York Cathedral

£395.00

These engravings by both drawn and engraved by Joseph Halfpenny (b.1748 - d.1811) show some of the gothic ornaments of York Cathedral. They are are from the first edition of Gothic Ornaments of the Cathedral at York, published in 1795, a publication which set out to comprehensively and precisely describe and depict the ornaments and architectural motifs of York Cathedral. Significantly, this publication pre-dates the arson attack by Jonathan Martin in 1829 (the fire was significant, it caused the lead on the roof to melt and limestone pillars to crack).

Halfpenny was perfectly positioned to undertake this work, not only was he a very skilled draughtsman and engraver, he was also the clerk to one of the architects who undertook some restoration and repair work, giving him a access and fine understanding of the architectural, decorative and structural features of York Cathedral.

Mounted in hand-crafted wooden frames behind glass, these are well proportioned and will look very elegant wherever they are displayed next.

A more detailed looked at these engravings is available here.
